MAiFF 2026 presents a spotlight on Asian-Canadian animations in partnership with the National Film Board of Canada, beginning with Red Star Alley at our opening ceremony.
Directed by Jenny Yujia Shi, Red Star Alley is an experimental animated short that captures a disappearing way of life in Beijing. Through delicate backlit cut-outs, the film brings the city’s alleyways to life in light, shadow, and movement, tracing the quiet fading of places, rhythms, and communities shaped by time.
A vital part of our Asian-Canadian Animations series, this spotlight marks an important recognition of the depth, innovation, and resonance of Asian-Canadian storytelling in animation today.
