The Golden Village Screening

May 15, 2026

Tomorrow at 5:00 PM, Cinéma du Parc MAIFF is presenting The Golden Village by Karen Cho.Set within the Asian plaza malls and shopping centres of Richmond, BC, The Golden Village is a warm and deeply observant portrait of the everyday spaces where culture, memory, commerce, and community intertwine. Through familiar greetings, shared meals, passing conversations, and routines repeated over time, the film reflects on how people slowly create a sense of belonging and home within constantly shifting landscapes.

Known for her socially engaged documentaries exploring identity, immigration, and social justice, Montreal-based filmmaker Karen Cho brings nearly two decades of documentary experience to this moving work. Her acclaimed films include In the Shadow of Gold Mountain, Seeking Refuge (Terre d’asile), and Status Quo? The Unfinished Business of Feminism in Canada. As our programmer’s note beautifully reflects, The Golden Village is ultimately about how people learn not only where they are staying, but how — and with whom — they are staying. In these shared commercial spaces, relationships, memories, and new forms of home quietly take shape.
