At Arts East-West’s 11th Korean Film Festival Canada 2024, we have initiated a naming protocol to honour the particularities of name ordering across Asia and the diaspora. For Korean film directors HONG Sangsoo and JEONG Jae-eun, we capitalize the family name and place it before the given name, as this follows the ordering of Korean names. For Taiwanese film director Hou Hsiao-hsien, we use the ordering of Chinese names by introducing the family name first, followed by the given name. Thai film director Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s name follows the convention of writing the given name, followed by the family name. For Chinese Quebecois film director Xiaodan He, we use her given name, followed by the family name. For Korean Canadian film director Anthony Shim, we use his given name, followed by the family name. Arts East-West gives special focus to Asian Canadian, Asian Quebecois, Korean, and pan-Asian artists. By following a naming protocol that follows the particular name ordering of artists in Asia and the diaspora, we are hoping to bridge mutual understanding among artists and their communities across Canada, pan-Asia, and beyond.
