Get your tickets for the last two screenings of the 11th Korean Film Festival Canada!On May 31st at Cinéma Moderne we’re screening the Canadian premier of The Pregnant Tree and the Goblin (6:30 PM to 8:30 PM) by KIM Dongryung and PARK Kyoungtae, along with Cemetery of Splendour by the well-known Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul (8:50 PM to 11 PM).In accordance with our theme, “Arts & Technologies: Sleep, Dream, Body,” both films represent the subjectivity of soldiers and women affected by war through sleeping states, and the blurred boundaries between waking life and fantasy.
The Pregnant Tree and the Goblin - Synopsis: When plans to demolish the American base in Uijungbu, Korea surface, Park Insun, a long-time resident of the neighboring shanty town and former “comfort woman,” experiences distress after she learns of a former colleague’s passing. This fictional film combines elements of fantasy and historical reality in its reckoning with the afterlives of US military bases and sexual trauma, empowering Insun to take control of her own fate.
