Since 1999, AmérAsia has been a vital platform for storytelling about the Asian diaspora. Under KFFC’s 12th edition, it returns with a new name and bold new energy: EMW. The EastMeetsWest (EMW) category at the 12th Korean Film Festrival Canada (KFFC) showcases deeply personal fiction films that challenge conventions and celebrate the diverse experiences of Asian Canadians.

“Mongrels” by Jerome YooSet in 1990s rural Canada, Mongrels follows a Korean widower and his two children as they navigate fate, grief and cultural displacement. Tasked with eradicating feral dogs threatening local farms, the father finds unexpected parallels between his family’s struggles and the misunderstood animals. Director Jerome Yoo’s debut feature is a poetic exploration of identity and resilience, blending realism with surreal imagery.
