Asian Diaspora Book Club Relaunch

May 17, 2024

We are thrilled to announce the relaunch of the Asian Diaspora Book Club (formerly Pachinko Book Club), presented by Asian Art Publication Lab and Arts East-West. Our online book club provides an enriching platform for anyone interested in exploring and sharing stories of the Asian diaspora.

Whether you’re an avid reader or simply passionate about the Asian diaspora and its diverse narratives, you are warmly welcomed to join our literary community. The Asian Diaspora Book Club provides a welcoming space where you can meet like-minded people, participate in stimulating discussions, and expand your perspective through books.

What to Expect:

  • Engaging book discussions on themes that matter.
  • Diverse perspectives and enriching conversations.
  • A supportive community of fellow book enthusiasts.
  • Opportunities to recommend and explore compelling reads.

Our first meeting date will be announced soon, so keep an eye on our website and social media channels for updates. We can’t wait to embark on this literary journey together!

We’ve selected two potential books for our inaugural meeting:

“My Mother is More Than a Comfort Woman” (Ang Aking Ina ay Higit sa Isang Comfort Woman, 母さんは「慰安婦」にされた――娘が語るロラたちの物語)

By Mothers’ Storybook Project Team, Illustrated by Naoko Okimoto
This book tells the story of the comfort women’s wartime experiences during World War II from the viewpoint of their family members. Additionally, it discusses the lives and obligations they bore as mothers, grandparents, and people. The authors hope that this will serve as a catalyst for younger generations to assist the survivors in obtaining justice and preventing the loss of their experiences to history.

“Human Acts” by HAN Kang

This Manhae Literary Award-winning novel intricately weaves the compelling narrative of a historic event whose echoes continue to resonate today. With poignant storytelling, it illuminates both the harsh realities of oppression and the extraordinary resilience of humanity.

How to Join: New members can join by filling out our Membership Registration Form. We look forward to having you as part of our vibrant community!

To stay informed about our club activities, engage in pre-meeting discussions, or simply get to know our community better, we invite you to join AAPLab’s Facebook Group.

Thank you for considering the Asian Diaspora Book Club as your literary home. We are excited to reconnect with former members and extend a warm welcome to newcomers. We’ll examine the diverse literature of the Asian diaspora as a group and exchange our individual viewpoints.
