The 11th KFFC 2024 is pleased to present the films in our last category: “East Meets West”!“
East Meets West” represents cultural bridges without borders made by remarkable feature films. The following three Asian masters films are invited:
in water (2023, Korea) by HONG Sangsoo
A Time to Live and a Time to Die (1985, Taiwan) by HOU Hsiao-hsien
Take Care of My Cat (2001, Korea) (2015) by JEONG Jae-eun
South Korean filmmaker HONG Sangsoo’s in water (2023, Korea): A bold, experimental, dreamy yet real film-within-a-film, in water reflects HONG’s rigorous strive to reinvent filmic forms in his use of landscapes and the tense pursuit of an artist’s passion project, creating a film with friends. The KFFC is proud to premier this film in Québec.
Taiwanese filmmaker HOU Hsiao-hsien’s A Time to Live and a Time to Die (1985, Taiwan): shown in tribute to HOU’s unforgettable lifelong achievements. This incredible film is inspired by director HOU’s upbringing in Taiwan while living through the deaths of his father, mother, and grandmother.
Korean female director JEONG Jae-eun’s Take Care of My Cat (2001, Korea): a timeless coming of age film about the friendship of five girls who are navigating life after graduating high school. Take Care of My Cat recalls the advent of early mobile phones with globalization, and the change of telecommunications technologies that underscore the film’s themes relating to connectivity and friendship.
